Preview of January 16, 2014 Games in NHL

There’s a busy night ahead of us and here’s preview of January 16, 2014 games in NHL. As many as eleven games are on Thursday’s menu. Let’s check on some of the most interesting details.

Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers

This is the second game of the season between two of the Original Six teams. Derrick Brassard scored an OT goal for Rangers’ 3:2 victory on Oct. 26th at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. This will be the last of a five game road trip for the Red Wings (2-2-0). New York is 6-3-1 in last ten games. Rangers are scheduled to play only one more game outside New York before the Olympic break. They are the sixth best team in the League in PP efficiency at 21.1 %, Detroit is struggling on that stats at 16.7 %. However, Red Wings are National Hockey League’s sixth team in PK at 85.1 %, Rangers are not far behind at 83.8 %. Slovak forward Tomas Tatar records a point per game in past four games for the Red Wings; Brad Richards has 8 points during the six game point streak for the Rangers. Red Wings will miss seven players due to injuries while Rangers have only Derek Dorsett on IR list.

Nashville Predators at Philadelphia Flyers

Flyers won the first game between the teams 3:2 in a SO on Nov. 30th in Nashville. Philadelphia is 7-3-0 in last ten games. Predators have just ended their five game homestand with a 4-2 victory over Calgary on Tuesday. Predators have aquired goaltender Devon Dubnyk from Edmonton on Wednesday since their number one goalie Pekka Rinne hasn’t played since Oct. 24th. Nashville is the better of the teams in PP efficiency at 20.6 %, Philadelphia is at 18.5 %. Well, Flyers have a better PK unit at 85.0 %; Predators are at 82.2 %. Wayne Simmonds has 17 points in past 14 games for the Flyers, David Legwand had three assists in Nashville’s win over the Flames on Tuesday.  Rinne is the lone Predator on IR list while Flyers will be without Zach Rinaldo and Scott Hartnell is questionable.

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators

This is the third game of the season in this all-Canadian clash. Senators won first two games. Ottawa also eliminated Montreal from Stanley Cup Play Offs in the first round of the last postseason. Ottawa is 10-4-3 since Dec. 9th. Canadiens are 5-3-2 in last ten games and haven’t won twice in a row since Dec. 28th. They haven’t capitalized on their last 18 PP opportunities since Jan 2nd. They are 18.9 % at PP this season. Senators are not any better at 19.0 %. Reigning Norris Trophy winner PK Subban hasn’t scored a single point in past five games for Montreal. Well, Canadiens have the fourth best PK in the League at 86.0 %; Ottawa is at 80.2 %. Montreal goaltender Carey Price has .923 SVPT over his past three starts. Kyle Turris has nine points in last ten games for Ottawa, his linemate Clarke MacArthur has scored five goals in past six games. Chris Neil is on IR list for Ottawa as are Davis Drewiske, Alex Galchenyuk and Ryan White for Montreal.

New York Islanders at Tampa Bay Lightning

Lightning won 3:2 in a SO in the first game between the teams on Dec 17th. Islanders are 9-4-2 in last 15 games. They ended a seven game road winning streak with a 4-2 loss to Florida on Tuesday. This is the fifth of their six game road trip. Tampa Bay is 5-4-1 in last ten games. Lightning Victor Hedman is to play his 300th regular season game in the National Hockey League. Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop leads the League with .937 SVPT, he is the second best with 4 SO this season and 1.83 GAA. Islanders forward John Tavares is third in League with 56 points scored. New York has the worst PK of all 30 teams at 75.3 %, Tampa Bay is at 80.4 %. Islanders are way better on PP with 18.5 %, Lightning are at 16.9 %. Steven Stamkos and four other players are on IR list for Tampa Bay as well as Evgeni Nabokov and Lubomir Visnovsky for the Islanders.

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues

Both teams have won one of the initial two games between them. Kings have just traded their back up goalie Ben Scrivens to Edmonton and recalled Martin Jones from minors AHL. First choice goaltender Johnathan Quick played 5 games (3-1-1) in a row since coming back from injury. He has 1.39 GAA and .942 SVPT in that span. Anze Kopitar has 9 points in eleven games for L.A. Blues forward T.J. Oshie has three two point games in 2014 already. Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo recorded 9 points in past six games. Kings are among top 8 teams in the league but their PP efficiency is pretty low at 14.6 %. Blues on the other hand are second best on PP with24.7 % accuracy. Blues are also the better team in SH situations at 85.3 % which is League’s fifth best percentage. Kings PK  is on 8th spot at 84.7 %. Assistan captain Matt Greene is on IR list for Kings as are Maxim Lapierre and Alex Steen for Blues.

Boston Bruins at Dallas Stars

This is the second and final game between the teams this season. Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverly each scored in a SO against their former team to lead Dallas to 3:2 win in TD Garden in Boston on Nov. 5th. Stars are 3-6-1 in last ten games as they ended a six game losing streak with a victory against Edmonton on Tuesday. Bruins lost five of their last eight games, but are still leading the Atlantic Division. This will be the first game back in Dallas for Reilly Smith and Loui Eriksson after they had been traded to Boston during last summer. Boston forward Brad Marchand leads the League with 3 SHG. Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask has made League’s leading 5 SO this season. Stars forward Ryan Garbutt has five points in past three games. Bruins are at 82.8 % on PK, Stars are at 79.6 %. Dallas is second last in PP at only 13.0 %; Boston is at 19.2 %. Chris Kelly, Dennis Seidenberg and Dougie Hamilton are on IR list for Boston while Stephane Robidas is the only Dallas player on that list.
